Gail Carson has spent the past four years focusing on strategy and international networks to guide evolution and mitigate uncertainty during the pandemic. Over the last decade, she has worked with several scientific preparedness response networks. She trained as an infectious diseases doctor, which opened opportunities to work with preparing for and responding to outbreaks. Currently, Gail is the Director of the international clinical research network – ISARIC, employed by the University of Oxford. In addition to her role at ISARIC, she serves as the Chair of the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) and chairs the EURO preparedness 2.0 technical advisory group. She holds a distinction Diploma in Organisational Leadership from Saïd Business School, completed in 2017, and values the benefits of collaboration with colleagues from diverse sectors, including the sporting sector. Research-wise, ISARIC is a federation of hospital-based clinical research networks with sites in 130 countries, established in 2011. ISARIC has responded to numerous epidemics and pandemics, resulting in multiple consortium publications, such as the Covid-19 observational database with one million patient records of severe cases. In terms of teaching, Gail has conducted simulation exercises for outbreaks as part of the International Health Masters course at Oxford for 10 years, with a current focus on health-related themes. The exercise has received support from WOAH, LSE, ISARIC, and GOARN over the years.
