Dr. Gail D Onofrio

Biography

Gail D’Onofrio is an internationally recognized expert in emergency medicine and addiction medicine, specifically focusing on alcohol and substance use disorders. She is the Albert E. Kent Professor at Yale School of Medicine and has significantly contributed to research on gender variations in ischemic heart disease. D’Onofrio's extensive clinical and research work includes leading NIH-funded trials and implementing innovative interventions to enhance addiction treatment engagement. She has served as the Physician-in-Chief of Emergency Services at Yale New Haven Hospital, overseeing a high-volume emergency department with a patient census of 180,000 annually. Her impactful research demonstrating the effectiveness of ED-initiated buprenorphine for patients with opioid use disorders has led to changes in clinical practices. D’Onofrio is also a dedicated mentor to junior researchers in addiction science, fostering future generations of physician-scientists. Her leadership roles extend to serving on national advisory councils and advocating for policies to combat the opioid crisis. Throughout her career, she has received numerous awards for her contributions to academia and clinical care, including the Distinguished Alumni Award from Boston University and recognition from the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
