Biography

Gail Matthews is an Infectious Diseases Physician and Program Head of the Therapeutic Research Vaccine Program at the Kirby Institute, UNSW. She also heads the Infectious Diseases department at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney. Dr. Matthews completed her PhD in 2009, focusing on therapeutic strategies for HIV and HBV co-infection. She is a UNSW Scientia Fellow and holds a NHMRC Career Development Fellowship. Her research focuses on therapeutic research in the fields of HIV and viral hepatitis, especially in relation to acute hepatitis C infection, HIV-HBV co-infection, and the long-term consequences of COVID-19 infections in people who inject drugs. Matthews is a member of several professional societies including the Australian Society for Infectious Diseases and the Australian Society for HIV Medicine and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
