Biography

Gail Murphy is a Professor in the University of British Columbia's Department of Computer Science and currently serves as the Vice-President of Research and Innovation. She has held this role since August 14, 2017, and was reappointed in 2023. With a BSc from the University of Alberta, an MSc from the University of Washington, and a PhD from the same institution, Murphy has extensive experience in software engineering and academia. Her research aims to enhance the productivity of software developers and knowledge workers by providing tools that help identify, manage, and coordinate information effectively. As a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), she co-founded Tasktop Technologies Incorporated, which was acquired by Planview Inc. in 2022. As Vice-President, she is pivotal in promoting UBC's research agendas and articulating its strengths to the academic community and beyond.
