Biography

Gal Shoval, M.D., has served as the Director of the Child and Adolescent Division at Geha Mental Health Center, which is affiliated with the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University. His expertise encompasses both normative and pathological development in children and adolescents, focusing particularly on risk behaviors, the use of psychoactive substances, and suicidal behavior, with an emphasis on early detection and prevention strategies. Prof. Shoval also conducts basic and clinical research on the potential therapeutic use of cannabinoids for treating psychiatric disorders. He has held prominent positions leading various clinical research projects on a national level in Israel, including a suicide prevention plan aimed at teenage immigrants in boarding schools and initiatives to enhance psychiatric services in schools. His work also addresses improving the diagnosis of teenage addiction and enhancing medication adherence within this age group. Alongside colleagues from Princeton and NYU, he has received the CRCNS grant to support a five-year study focused on computational phenotyping and decision-making in adolescent psychopathology, tackling the challenges associated with comprehensive age-normed neurocognitive evaluations that remain unmet.
