Biography

Gale Coskan-Johnson is an Associate Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at Brock University. Her academic background includes a PhD in Composition and Cultural Rhetoric from Syracuse University, an MA in TESOL from Northern Arizona University, and a BA in History from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her teaching area focuses on writing and rhetoric, and her research primarily explores rhetorical entanglements concerning sovereign power and transnational migration. She examines how public 'official' texts become widely available in North America through the Freedom of Information Act and the increasing digitalization of documents. Coskan-Johnson is particularly interested in how the heightened publicity surrounding these texts shapes public discourses regarding immigration and perceptions of foreigners. Her current research project titled “(Il)legal, (Ir)regular, (Un)documented: Rhetorics of Sovereignty and Transnational Migration” investigates the tensions that arise between national and international discourses on transnational migration. She is also open to supervising work related to rhetorical studies, border studies, human rights, transnational feminism, nations and nationalisms, and postcolonial studies.
