Biography

Galen McKinley is a Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University's Data Science Institute. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Rice University and a PhD in Climate Physics and Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. McKinley has served as a Professor in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of Wisconsin—Madison from 2004 to 2017. His research interests include ocean dynamics and climate change, focusing on interactions between oceanic and atmospheric systems. He is involved in numerous service activities, including membership on the National Academies Ocean Studies Board and the Climate Global Dynamics Advisory Panel for the National Center for Atmospheric Research. In recognition of his contributions to the scientific community, he received the Ocean Science Voyager Award from the American Geophysical Union in 2020.
