Dr. Gareth Doherty

Biography

Gareth Doherty is an Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design, with a focus on critical landscapes in relation to design and social equity. His research broadly examines the impact of landscape architecture on diverse societies, drawing from experiences in regions such as the Arabian Peninsula, Brazil, and the Caribbean. Doherty's notable publication, 'Paradoxes Green: Landscapes City-State,' explores the cultural implications of the color green within urban environments that feature contrasting arid landscapes. His work challenges landscape architecture theories, questioning how the discipline can be more inclusive of varying societal values. He has contributed to a number of edited volumes and academic journals, reflecting his engagement with ecological urbanism and designed landscapes. Additionally, Doherty has built landscape architectural projects and is active in various professional associations across Nigeria, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
