Dr. Gareth Evans

Biography

Gareth Lloyd Evans is an Associate Professor at the University of Oxford, specializing in Old Norse-Icelandic literature. He is a Tutorial Fellow at St John's College and has a keen research interest in Old Middle English literature as well as Old Norse. His important contributions to the field include his authorship of 'Men and Masculinities in the Sagas of Icelanders' (Oxford University Press, 2019) and co-editing 'Masculinities in Old Norse Literature' (D. S. Brewer, 2020). He is set to publish 'Saga Emotions' with Manchester University Press in 2025. Currently, Evans is focusing on the representation of emotion in Old Norse literature, working on a monograph titled 'Poetics of Emotion in Old Norse Saga Narrative' under contract with Boydell & Brewer. He is also co-editing 'New Studies on Emotion in Old Norse Literature' and serves as the convenor and Principal Investigator for the AHRC-funded 'Old Norse Emotion Network', which will run from 2024 to 2026. In addition to his teaching and research duties, Evans is involved in various scholarly roles, including being a steering committee member and treasurer for the Gender and Medieval Studies Group and part of the editorial board for Brepols' book series on Gender, Sexuality, and the Global Middle Ages. He is enthusiastic about supervising prospective doctoral students in Old Norse-Icelandic literature and is presently guiding doctoral student Grace O'Duffy on her research regarding sexual violence against women in Old Norse literature.
