Biography

Gareth James is an internationally exhibited artist, having previously worked in London and New York before joining the University of British Columbia in the summer of 2010. His artistic practice encompasses an enduring interest in the histories of iconoclasm and the social divisions and inequities that delineate artistic practice. James integrates theoretical paradigms and experimental methodologies, emphasizing the phenomenological bodies and theoretical materials that influence his work. He was a founding member of Orchard, a cooperatively organized gallery on New York’s Lower East Side, from 2005 to 2008. James's work has been exhibited widely, with notable solo exhibitions at Galerie Christian Nagel in Köln, Franco Soffiantino Arte Contemporanea in Torino, Elizabeth Dee Gallery in New York, and Miguel Abreu Gallery in New York. He has contributed writings to prominent journals such as Artforum and Texte zur Kunst, and curated exhibitions that include traveling retrospectives of the works of Jean-Luc Godard.
