Biography

Gareth Jenkins graduated from the University of Liverpool and obtained his PhD from the University of Leeds in 1979, focusing on photosynthetic electron transport and leaf senescence under the supervision of Professor Harold Woolhouse. He undertook postdoctoral research in the Genetics Department at Leeds, studying photo-responses in mutants of Physcomitrella patens. In 1982, he moved to the University of Warwick to work as a postdoctoral researcher where he explored the molecular photobiology of phytochrome and its role in controlling gene expression in plants. He joined the University of Glasgow as a lecturer in 1986, and subsequently attained promotions to Senior Lecturer, Reader, and finally to Professor of Plant Cell Molecular Biology in 2000. His research primarily investigates the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying plant responses to light, particularly the regulation of gene expression by ultraviolet-B light, and has made significant contributions to the understanding of the UV-B photoreceptor UVR8. In addition to his research, Gareth is deeply committed to education, having developed curriculum programs and coordinated various courses at the University. His teaching and curriculum development initiatives include leading the MSci degree program and directing the MSc Food Security program.
