Biography

Gareth Thomas graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine with a dentistry degree in 1989. He gained the Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1994 and undertook an MScD at the University of Wales College of Medicine, awarded in 1995. He completed a PhD on keratinocyte biology at University College London in 2000 and finished his clinical training in Head & Neck pathology at University College Hospital London in 2004. Thomas was awarded the Health Foundation/Royal College of Pathologists Clinician Scientist Fellowship in 2004, combining research at Bart’s Cancer Institute with clinical practice as a Consultant Pathologist. In 2007, he was appointed Chair of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology at Bart's London and moved to Southampton as Professor of Experimental Pathology in 2009. His research primarily focuses on the role of fibroblasts in cancer progression, particularly their interactions with immune cells and implications for immunotherapy resistance. He leads a research team dedicated to developing novel therapies targeting cancer-associated fibroblasts. Thomas has supervised a significant number of PhD and MD students, contributing extensively to the field through high-impact publications and clinical trials.
