Biography

Professor Gareth Williams has been a pivotal figure in the University of Michigan's Department of Romance Languages and Literatures since 2002. His extensive research spans modern and contemporary cultural and political traditions in Latin America and the United States, with a particular emphasis on the history of political thought, cultural representation, and continental philosophy. Williams has directed over twenty-five Ph.D. dissertations, contributing significantly to the academic community. His work has been influential in debates surrounding neoliberalism, post-Marxism, and the implications of cultural representation in contemporary societies. He is the co-founder and co-editor of the University of Texas Press book series "Border Hispanisms" and serves as the General Editor of the online journal "Política común." His notable publications include "Side Popular: Neoliberalism and Subalternity in Latin America" and "Infrapolitical Passages: Global Turmoil, Narco-Accumulation, Post-Sovereign State," where he explores critical themes of biopolitics and the disruptions of global economies. Williams' academic journey began with a Ph.D. from the University of California-Davis in 1992. He continues to engage with complex questions of the role of cultural narratives and subjectivity in shaping political and social realities.
