Biography

Garnette Sutherland is a Professor in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Calgary. He completed his undergraduate education in science and medicine at the University of Manitoba from 1974 to 1978. Sutherland then pursued post-graduate education, completing his training in 1984 at the University of Western Ontario. He began his academic career as an Assistant Professor of Surgery (Neurosurgery) and Pharmacology at the University of Manitoba and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1988. In 1993, he accepted a position as Professor and Head of Neurosurgery at the University of Calgary, where he has contributed significantly to the fields of science and medicine, evidenced by his 166 abstracts, 136 peer-reviewed publications, and five patents. His primary research focus is the application of MR techniques in the study of neurological diseases. Sutherland has successfully attracted substantial funding from local and national grant competitions and has received multiple awards, including the Manning Award of Distinction for the development of an Intraoperative MR system based on a movable 1.5 Tesla magnet. He is the Founding Director of the Seaman Family MR Research Centre and has been invited to present his work internationally across various continents. In 2012, he was awarded the Order of Canada for his outstanding contributions to neurosurgery.
