Garrett Hellenthal's research group focuses on developing and applying new statistical models to infer the genetic history of human populations. His work involves identifying past periods of intermixing among groups and pinpointing genetic variants that have allowed humans to adapt to historical environmental pressures, such as pathogens. Additionally, he aims to understand the role of the epigenome, particularly methylation, in mediating the influence of the environment on human health. Prior to his current position, he worked at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, where he was under the supervision of Peter Donnelly from 2009 to 2012. His primary work involved identifying regions of the genome associated with multiple sclerosis susceptibility as part of the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium 2 project, in collaboration with the International Multiple Sclerosis Genetics Consortium. Throughout his career, he has been engaged in inferring the historical intermixing of human populations using genetic variation data.
