Dr. Garrett Nicolai

Biography

Garrett Joseph Nicolai is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of British Columbia. He is also the Director of the Master of Data Science - Computational Linguistics program. His research interests encompass the application of computational tools for the analysis and development of under-resourced languages, as well as the role of qualitative analysis and deep learning methods in linguistic studies. In the classroom, Dr. Nicolai is focused on bringing computational skills to a wider audience, acknowledging the underrepresentation of various groups in STEM fields, particularly those traditionally left out. He strongly believes in providing access and resources to these groups to foster interest and participation in the field of linguistics and language sciences.
