Biography

W. Gary Ernst is a renowned geoscientist who held pre- and postdoctoral fellowships at the Geophysical Laboratory before joining the UCLA faculty in January 1960. In 1989, he moved to Stanford University and became an emeritus faculty member in September 2004. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. Ernst served as president of the Mineralogical Society of America from 1980-1981 and the Geological Society of America from 1985-1986. He has received numerous prestigious awards including the MSA Award in 1969, the Geological Society Japan Medal in 1998, the Penrose Medal from the GSA in 2004, the Roebling Medal in 2006, and the AGI Legendary Geoscientist Award in 2008. With a prolific output, Ernst is the author of seven books and over 300 scientific papers focusing on physical chemistry of rocks and minerals and geological processes related to plate tectonics and the evolution of lithospheric plates. His teaching and research interests include petrology, geochemistry, and geology's impact on human health, particularly in northern California and eastern Asia.
