Biography

UKRI Clean Air Champions working to provide leadership and coordination for the Clean Air Programme with a wider research stakeholder community. Led the development of the London Air Quality Network to become the largest urban network in Europe, providing a solid grounding in air quality measurement techniques. Pursued network data analysis techniques to characterize sources, trends, and changes in urban air pollution to determine policies for improvement. Involved in the development and application of source apportionment techniques to quantify impacts of particulate matter arising from poorly represented emissions inventories including construction, waste management, volcanos, and urban wood burning. Member of the Medical Research Council Centre for Environment and Health, collaborating with toxicologists, clinicians, and epidemiologists to promote the use of air pollution measurements in health studies. Engaged with Defra’s Air Quality Expert Group, served as a project reviewer, and is a steering group member of the Irish EPA. Past roles include co-opted Committee member for Medical Effects of Air Pollution, reviewing the UK air quality index, and membership in the air quality committee of the Environmental Protection UK science advisory committee. Co-authored 'Breath Take,' a report by the Royal College of Physicians on the life-long impacts of air pollution. A passionate communicator of air pollution science to policymakers and the public, contributing to the Guardian newspaper with the Pollution Watch column, and participating in the Guardian Ideal Cities series and Science Weekly Podcasts. Writing credits include BBC Science Focus Magazine, Irish Wired, Geographical Magazine, and Mail on Sunday.
