Gary Hatfield received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1979. He has taught at Harvard University and Johns Hopkins University before joining the University of Pennsylvania in 1987. His research focuses on the history of modern philosophy, the philosophy of psychology, theories of vision, and the philosophy of science. Hatfield has been a member of initiatives at the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience and the Center for Neuroaesthetics and has directed dissertations in the fields of the history of philosophy, psychology, and the philosophy of science. He has a long-standing interest in visual perception and the mind–body problem.
