Biography

Gary Hecht is a Professor in the Department of Accountancy and serves as the Associate Dean for Professional Education Pathways at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He began his academic career at Illinois in 2013 and has held several notable positions including Academic Director of the iMSA Program from 2017 to 2020 and Executive Director of Lifelong Learning in Accountancy from 2020 to 2022. Prior to his tenure at Illinois, he was an Assistant Professor at Emory University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Hecht has received multiple honors, including the Arthur Andersen Faculty Fellowship. He has published various research articles focusing on performance measurement and group incentives in managerial accounting. His academic contributions have earned him recognition as an excellent teacher as indicated by his repeated inclusion on the List of Teachers Ranked Excellent at the University. He obtained his B.S. in Accountancy from Illinois State University in 1995 and his Ph.D. in Accountancy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2005.
