Biography

Gary Morris joined Southampton Education School in July 2021 after completing a doctorate at the University of Oxford. His doctoral research examined collaborations among a wide range of organizations, including private and public sectors, to understand effective learning. He has extensive experience in developing, leading, and managing collaborations focused on educational training. Prior to his current role, Gary worked in various capacities in the British Army, where he was appointed Director of Educational Training Services and later became the Director of Educational Capability. During his tenure, he made significant contributions to apprenticeships and literacy, earning recognition as the Adult Learners’ Week National Employer of the Year and a place among the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers. Gary has also contributed to the House of Commons Inquiry on Adult Literacy and Numeracy. He was awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service in Bosnia in 1998 and was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the New Year’s Honours of 2016.
