Biography

Gary Snapper is a departmental lecturer in Education at the University of Oxford, specializing in English Education. He serves as a Curriculum Tutor and General Tutor for the PGCE course while also supervising MSc Learning Teaching students. Prior to his current role, he was the Head of English at Impington Village College in Cambridge and is currently pursuing doctoral research, aiming to gain a PhD from the Institute of Education in London. His doctoral research explores the conceptions of the English discipline, focusing on the attitudes of students and lecturers towards the subject and the various approaches to teaching and learning at the post-16 level. His research interests extend to the history and theory of the English discipline, examining the tensions that arise from historical perspectives and how these manifest in the attitudes and approaches of teachers towards students in schools and universities. In particular, he has a keen interest in the teaching of poetry and contributes to the education sector through various roles, including as an editor for Teaching English magazine and as a curriculum developer for the International Baccalaureate Organisation.
