Biography

Gary S. May became the seventh chancellor of the University of California, Davis on August 1, 2017. He served as dean of the College of Engineering at Georgia Tech from July 2011 to June 2017 and held the position of Steve W. Chaddick School Chair in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering from May 2005 to June 2011. May was the executive assistant to Georgia Tech's President G. Wayne Clough from 2002 to 2005, and he joined the ECE faculty in 1991 as a member of the school's microelectronics group. His research focuses on computer-aided manufacturing and integrated circuits. He was recognized as a National Science Foundation National Young Investigator from 1993 to 1998 and served as Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Semiconductor Manufacturing from 1997 to 2001. May authored around 200 articles and technical presentations in the field of IC computer-aided manufacturing. In 2001, he was named a Motorola Foundation Professor and appointed associate chair for Faculty Development. He founded Georgia Tech's Summer Undergraduate Research in Engineering/Science (SURE) program to attract talented minority students to graduate school, and he led the Facilitating Academic Careers in Engineering and Science (FACES) program designed to encourage minority engagement in engineering and science careers. May has been a graduate fellow at the National Science Foundation and AT&T Bell Laboratories and has worked as a member of the technical staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ.
