Biography

Gaston Heimeriks is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Innovation Studies, Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University. He is also a visiting professor at the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University and a UGlobe fellow at the Centre for Global Challenges at Utrecht University. His research and teaching contribute to understanding the complex dynamics arising from the co-evolution of knowledge, economy, and societal institutions, particularly regarding how universities are responding to persistent sustainability challenges. His work uses the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a proxy for sustainability and employs a mixed methods approach to map the research and teaching landscape, identifying emerging communities of researchers and educators engaged with the SDGs. He is actively involved in the 'Understanding Deep Transitions' project, which examines the unsustainable systems that have been built and dismantled in modern industrial societies. Heimeriks focuses on how transformative changes can be effectively initiated and supported in the contexts of sustainable transitions, emphasizing the geographical aspects of these dynamics.
