Dr. Gavin Edwards

Biography

Gavin Edwards completed his PhD studies at Monash University under the supervision of G. B. Deacon and D. StC Black. He then conducted postdoctoral research at Imperial College with W. B. Motherwell from 1987 to 1989, followed by a senior position at Cambridge University with Professor Steven Ley in 1997. Edwards has been associated with the University of New South Wales (UNSW) since 1990, serving as a Lecturer initially and later appointed as Senior Lecturer. Since 2011, he has held the role of Director of Teaching in the School of Chemistry and has taken on additional responsibilities as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs within the Faculty of Science. His work encompasses various aspects of medicinal chemistry, focusing on organic synthetic methodologies. Collaborative efforts with Dr. Laurence Wakelin and Professor David Black have led to the exploration of novel DNA-binding agents with potential anticancer effects, involving the study of diverse ellipticine analogues and metallointercalation reagents. His research also investigates new synthetic methods, particularly the development of reactions involving free radical addition and heterocyclic compound synthesis, including the application of these methods in natural product synthesis.
