Biography

Gavin Foster (PhD, University of Notre Dame, 2009) is a Professor of Modern Irish History at Concordia University. His research focuses on the early twentieth-century Irish revolutionary period and the pre-history of its legacies. His interests include the Irish Republican Army's political culture, political violence, the formation of the party state, social conflict, class respectability, labor history, migration, and popular culture. His monograph, 'Irish Civil War Society: Politics, Class Conflict' (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015), won the James S. Donnelly, Sr. Prize from the American Conference for Irish Studies. His articles have been published in various journals, and he has contributed chapters to books on Irish history. Foster has presented his work at numerous conferences in the U.S., Canada, and Ireland and has appeared on podcasts and documentary films related to the Irish Revolution. His current research utilizes oral history interviews and local fieldwork in Ireland to explore the memory of the Irish Civil War across generations.
