Biography

Professor Gavin Foster specializes in Isotope Geochemistry at the University of Southampton. His research focuses on using cutting-edge isotopic geochemical techniques to understand the impact of anthropogenic climate change on the Earth System. Currently, he is involved in projects that investigate the use of boron isotopes in calcareous shells of foraminifera and tropical deep-sea corals to reconstruct oceanic carbonate systems over various timescales in the past. Foster's work addresses the impacts of climate change on the calcification of corals and foraminifera and explores the mechanisms of biomineralization through isotopic geochemistry to trace sources of anthropogenic air pollution. He leads several active research projects such as Microns2Reefs, C-FORCE, and CoralChem, focusing on coral biomineralization, carbon cycle dynamics, and the implications of carbon emissions on past global temperatures. He has collaborated with multiple institutions and researchers to further the understanding of volatile cycling, ocean acidification, and climate sensitivity through various studies and projects.
