Dr. Gavin Hazel

Biography

Gavin Hazel has established himself in the field of mental health education and currently serves as a Lecturer at Macquarie School of Education. He is dedicated to raising awareness about the social and emotional wellbeing of children and young people by translating research evidence into practical applications. Hazel has led numerous Commonwealth and State initiatives aimed at supporting the mental health wellbeing of young Australians. In his current role, he has made significant contributions as Program Manager at Everymind, focusing on mental health research and initiatives. His academic journey includes a conjoint appointment at the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Newcastle and experience as a Senior Research Scientist at the Defence Science Technology Organization. He also served as a Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the School of Psychological Sciences at Macquarie University. Hazel's expertise encompasses managing multidisciplinary teams, developing ethics submissions, and conducting complex analyses in the context of mental health education. He holds a PhD from the University of Newcastle and has significantly contributed to the fields of mental health and educational research, securing $6.5 million in project funding. His research emphasizes collaborative methodologies aimed at improving mental health outcomes across diverse communities. His interests include mental health interventions for children and young people and the psycho-social aspects of stress in educational settings.
