Biography

Gavin Ramsay is an Honorary Professor at the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, specializing in Time Domain Astrophysics and X-ray Astronomy. His research focuses on compact binary systems, flare stars, and the electromagnetic counterparts of Gravitational Wave events. He serves as a member of the STFC’s Ernest Rutherford Fellowship panel and has contributed significantly as a Chair of the Gravitational Wave Grants Panel. Gavin is an active participant in the ESA Plato Community and its Science Working Team. His work includes investigating the behavior of binary stars with varying orbital periods, especially those classified as Cataclysmic Variables that undergo Roche Lobe overflow. Through extensive study using data from space missions such as Kepler, K2, and TESS, he assesses the characteristics and behaviors of M dwarf stars. His contributions to understanding stellar flares and their implications for potentially habitable exoplanets make him a prominent figure in contemporary astrophysics research.
