Biography

Gavin Winston is an Associate Professor at Queen’s University, holding a cross-appointment in the Department of Medicine and the School of Computing. He previously served as a Visiting Professor at McGill University and was a MRC Clinician Scientist. Dr. Winston completed his medical education at the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford and underwent neurology training at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. He received his PhD in Neuroimaging and Epilepsy from University College London with support from a MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship. His clinical interests extend to rapid neurological assessments for patients with refractory focal epilepsy and the integration of neuroimaging into epilepsy treatment. He founded the Seizure Clinic at Kingston Health Sciences Centre and has been instrumental in establishing epilepsy surgery capabilities in South-Eastern Ontario. His research focuses on using computational neuroimaging techniques, including machine learning, to enhance the understanding and treatment outcomes for patients undergoing epilepsy surgery. Dr. Winston has contributed to multiple international neuroimaging studies and has published approximately 80 peer-reviewed papers. He received the Sir Peter Mansfield Prize for his innovative work and was awarded the American Epilepsy Society Young Investigator Award. He is an elected Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has supervised numerous graduate students.
