Biography

Gavino Scala obtained his PhD in Romance Philology in 2021 from the University of Siena, in co-supervision with the University of Zurich. His thesis, titled ‘La tradizione manoscritta del Livre du gouvernement des roys et des princes di Henri de Gauchy. Studio filologico e saggio di edizione’, laid the groundwork for his monograph published in 2024, which explores critical editions and philological studies related to historical texts. Scala's work extends to numerous research activities at the Universities of Fribourg and Geneva, where he contributed to philological-historical studies, notably in the project concerning the 'Treaties of Ambassadors', examining normative discourses from the 13th to 16th centuries. In 2024, he earned a Certificate in Digital Humanities from the University of Geneva, focusing on digital editing and OCR-HTR systems for medieval manuscripts. Currently, he serves as a Post-Doctoral Assistant on a project titled 'Fable, Emblem, Poem, Performance: Renaissance Word Image Tales', supervised by Professor G. Cirnigliaro. His research interests encompass French, Latin, and Italian medieval didactic literature, particularly the genre 'specula principis' and diplomatic treatises, as well as the interplay between law and literature in the medieval landscape.
