Dr. Gavitt Woodard

Biography

Gavitt Woodard, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at Yale School of Medicine, specializing in thoracic surgery and particularly in the care of patients with lung cancer. She completed her medical degree at Stanford University in 2011, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology from Harvard University in 2006. Dr. Woodard has undergone rigorous training, including a General Surgery Residency at the University of California, San Francisco, and a Thoracic Surgery Fellowship at the same institution, completing her training in 2020. Her research focuses on early-stage non-small cell lung cancer, including biomarkers, immune cell infiltration, and tumor microenvironment studies. Notably, she contributed to the discovery of PD-L1, a pivotal protein in cancer immunotherapy, in collaboration with Dr. Lieping Chen. Dr. Woodard's work has received funding from the Yale SPORE Lung Cancer grant, American Cancer Society, and several prestigious awards from surgical societies. She is actively involved in a multidisciplinary care team that integrates oncologists and radiation specialists to enhance patient outcomes. Her clinical expertise is complemented by her research interests in advancing the early detection of lung cancer through innovative techniques and technologies.
