Biography

Dr. Hwang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Preventive & Restorative Sciences at Penn Dental Medicine, where he has been a faculty member since 2013. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Biomolecular Engineering and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Yonsei University. Prior to joining Penn, Dr. Hwang served as a lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Seoul National University of Science and Technology. His research focuses on applying engineering principles and tools to understand the pathogenesis of biofilm-associated oral diseases, as well as developing therapeutic approaches to treat these conditions. His work explores the dynamic interplay between host and microbes in the context of infectious oral disease and employs various methodologies, including biochemical/biophysical techniques, confocal imaging, and mathematical modeling. Dr. Hwang has published extensively in the area of biofilm research and has received multiple awards for his contributions to the field, including the Joseph Josephine Rabinowitz Award for Excellence in Research from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine.
