Dr. Geert Janssen

Biography

Geert Janssen is a Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Amsterdam. He has academic interests in European history from 1500 to 1800, including areas such as political and religious cultures, as well as the history of migration. His research includes significant studies on political clientelism, religious conflict, and the cultural history of refugees during the early modern period. Janssen's work often centers on the Low Countries and the Dutch Revolt, particularly during the Dutch Republic's 'golden age' in the 17th century. He holds a PhD from Leiden University and has held academic positions at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. He became a chair of early modern history at the University of Amsterdam in 2013 and has served as research director at the Amsterdam School of Historical Studies. His funded research projects include the NWO-Vici project focused on refugee social and political categories in early modern Europe. He has received numerous accolades for his work, including the Gerald Strauss Book Prize, signifying his contributions to the field of early modern historical studies.
