Dr. Geert Somsen

Biography

Geert Somsen is a historian of science specializing in the history of science and technology studies. He serves as the Director of the MA program in European Studies on Society, Science, and Technology (ESST) at Maastricht University and is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of History of Knowledge. Somsen has significant experience in PhD training as the coordinator for the Netherlands Graduate School for Science, Technology, and Modern Culture (WTMC) and has served as a jury member and chair for the Reingold Prize in the History of Science. In addition to his academic responsibilities, he is a commentator for national Dutch newspapers and international magazines and participates actively in public speaking events, including Studium Generale and podcast production. His research primarily examines the international dimensions of science over the past centuries, with a focus on scientific internationalism and the role of science in fostering peaceful cooperation. Somsen's recent collaborative project, funded by the EU, has explored the historical relationship between scientific conferences and social, cultural, and political histories. He has also investigated the legacy of European imperialism in relation to international science. Somsen has taught at various universities, including Columbia University and Uppsala University, and has held fellowships at highly regarded institutions. He holds an MSc in Chemistry from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and a PhD in the History of Science from Utrecht University, reflecting his strong academic background in both science and humanities.
