Dr. Geeta Persad

Biography

Geeta Persad is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research focuses on the innovative application of numerical global climate modeling to understand the behavior and societal impacts of the physical climate system. Dr. Persad's core work emphasizes the role of particulate aerosol emissions and their radiative forcing in offsetting greenhouse gases during the industrial era, driving the inter-regional differences in the magnitude and rate of climate change and the emergence of heat and hydroclimate extremes. A growing branch of her research applies insights from climate physics to address questions at the interface of climate and hydrology, particularly aims at understanding how climate shifts might stress water management in the Central and Western United States. The overarching goal of her lab's work is to illuminate climatic changes that could stress human systems, using this understanding to inform decision-making contexts and improve societal outcomes.
