Biography

Geetha Berera organizes and teaches undergraduate laboratory classes, developing experiments within the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She teaches all sophomore and junior core laboratory classes, including Materials Structure Lab (3.081), Thermodynamics of Materials (3.020), Synthesis and Design of Materials (3.023), and Electronic, Optical, and Magnetic Properties of Materials (3.033). Berera joined MIT as a postdoctoral associate and continued her work as a research associate in Professor Ronald Latanision’s research group within DMSE’s H.H. Uhlig Corrosion Laboratory. She received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Mysore University in India, and her Master's and PhD in physics from Tufts University. A Science Fellow at the Bunting Institute (now the Radcliffe Institute of Advanced Study at Harvard University), Berera's integrated research and hands-on teaching style spans a wide spectrum of materials science areas including crystal growth, thin films, and structure-property evaluation related to corrosion. She has a passion for learning and teaching, providing guidance to students at various levels, including postdocs and professionals in both academic and industrial sectors. Additionally, she is a founding trustee of a nonprofit organization aimed at educational initiatives in Coorg, India, her birthplace, and has collaborated to conduct annual science fairs for local middle and high school students.
