Biography

Gemmae M. Fix is an associate professor at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, where she focuses on General Internal Medicine. With a PhD from the State University of New York at Buffalo, her research integrates applied medical anthropology and health services research. Dr. Fix is currently the Acting Associate Director for the Center for Health Optimization Implementation Research (CHOIR) at the VA Health Services Research Center of Innovation, collaborating with Boston Bedford VA Medical Centers. Her work utilizes ethnographic and qualitative methods to enhance patient-centered care, especially for marginalized populations such as those living with HIV. Dr. Fix has led projects funded by AHRQ and the VA examining patient experiences and engaging patients in the research process. She is also dedicated to the professional development of social scientists and has contributed extensively to literature regarding careers in anthropology. As a Fellow of the Academy of Communication in Healthcare and Secretary of the Society for Applied Anthropology Board, she focuses on advancing the use of social science methods in healthcare research.
