Dr. Gene Gibbons

Biography

Gene Gibbons is an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre at Concordia University, where he has been a tenured faculty member since 1984. He earned his PhD in Theory and Policy Studies from the University of Toronto and holds an MFA in Scenography from Purdue University, along with degrees in Drama, Production Design, and coursework in Non-Profit Administration from various institutions. His professional theatre experience commenced in 1986, and he has worked extensively across Canada. Gibbons has held several administrative roles, including Chair of the Department of Theatre and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts. He is actively involved in professional associations including ADC Associated Designers Canada and served on boards and committees that advocate for education and arts administration. His research interests focus on educational policy, particularly in relation to gender pay equity and the impact of funding models in the arts. Gene has published numerous scholarly papers as part of his academic work and has presented at national conferences, emphasizing collaborative scholarly activity in theatrical design. He continues to engage in consultancy and community service related to institutional planning and arts education.
