Geophysicist Gene Simmons earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering in 1949 from Texas A&M College and a Master of Science in Geology with a minor in physics from Southern Methodist University in 1958. He pursued his PhD in 1962 and completed postdoctoral studies at Harvard University. Simmons joined the faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1965. In October 1969, after four years at MIT, he was named Chief Scientist at the NASA Manned Space Center for the final Apollo missions. In this capacity, he authored a series of popular mission guides, titled 'Moon Apollo 15, 16, 17', which helped the public follow the astronauts as they conducted scientific work during the missions. His books sold hundreds of thousands of copies. After leaving NASA, Simmons returned to MIT and continued his career until retiring in 1989, subsequently becoming Vice President at Hager-Richter Geoscience Inc.
