Biography

Graduated in management, civil law, and common law from McGill University and holds a Doctorate in Law from Cambridge University. Geneviève Saumier is the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the Université de Montréal since August 1, 2024. She is a world-renowned specialist in private international law and is also recognized for her expertise in consumer law as well as judicial and extrajudicial dispute resolution in civil and commercial matters. Her contributions to law earned her the Paul-André-Crépeau Medal, awarded in 2016 by the Canadian Bar Association. Before joining Université de Montréal, she was a full professor at the Faculty of Law at McGill, where she joined in 1996 and served as Associate Dean of Studies. In addition to teaching courses in her fields of specialization, she also taught tort law for fifteen years. Her expertise has been sought by the Canadian government in the context of negotiations for international instruments, including the recent 2019 Hague Convention on Judgments, of which she is a co-author of the official explanatory report. She also participates in harmonization of law projects at the Conference on Harmonization of Laws in Canada and the Institute for the Unification of Private Law, UNIDROIT, in Rome. She serves on the boards of the Canadian Telecommunications Ombudsman, the Office de la protection du consommateur du Québec, and the Claude Masse Foundation.
