Biography

Geng Wang joined the School of Education at the University of Glasgow as a lecturer in September 2023. Prior to this, he worked as an Associate Researcher at Tianjin University in China from 2020 to 2023. He holds a PhD from the University of Glasgow in education and an MSc in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh. Geng has experience teaching in vocational colleges in China from 2013 to 2016. His research interests encompass the sociology of vocational education and training, focusing on skill formation and the impact of vocational higher education programs on young people's transitions in learning and development. Using a sociological lens, he has explored topics such as student aspirations in vocational colleges, student agency, skill policies, institutional arrangements for skill formation, and labor market outcomes. His research has a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary approach, with projects conducted in the UK, China, and South Africa in collaboration with international researchers. Geng is the co-investigator on a British Academy-funded project that examines precarious work and the future careers of young people in South Africa and China. He has established a track record of publications and guest talks, particularly in the field of vocational education and the experiences of young people in vocational pathways.
