Biography

Dr. Patrick received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1999, working in the laboratory of Dr. Li-Huei Tsai. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology, supported by the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation and the United Negro College Fund/Merck. Dr. Patrick joined the faculty at the University of California, San Diego in 2004 and has focused on understanding the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) and its role in synaptic plasticity and neurodegenerative diseases. His laboratory studies the mechanisms through which synaptic activity influences the molecular composition of synaptic connections in the mammalian central nervous system, emphasizing protein synthesis and degradation as key regulatory processes. Dr. Patrick's research seeks to elucidate how UPS mediates the trafficking of AMPA receptors in neurons and how its dysfunction may contribute to neurodegenerative conditions characterized by protein aggregation, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.
