Geoff Bird is a Professor in the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford, focusing on Cognitive Neuroscience and Social Cognition. His research primarily investigates Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) to explore the dynamics of social and non-social stimuli, executive functions, empathy, decision making, and emotional awareness among adults with ASD. He has conducted notable studies on the development of theory of mind and social emotions during adolescence under Professor Sarah-Jayne Blakemore, and studied the neural basis of empathy and fairness with Professor Tania Singer. Bird also contributed to the Centre for Economic Learning and Social Evolution (ELSE) as a Postdoctoral Fellow, working alongside Professor Cecilia Heyes on imitation and decision making in both typically-developing adults and those with ASD. He has worked with the UK government as a science policy advisor and has held positions at Birkbeck and the MRC Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre at King’s College London. His keen interest in interoception and alexithymia stems from his extensive experience studying emotional awareness.
