Geoff Fowler is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. He completed his PhD in 1993, focusing on 'The Thermal Conversion of Contaminated Soils to Carbonaceous Adsorbents'. His research has broadened over the years to include the study of waste resources, with a strong emphasis on fundamental chemistry pertaining to waste-binder interactions and stabilization-solidification systems. His work has significant implications for contaminated soil remediation, including leaching analysis of organic compounds and the treatment of plastic materials. Fowler is also involved in the production, testing, surface modification, and regeneration of activated carbon. Additionally, he works on faecal sludge and sewage sludge treatment and valorisation, along with the disassembly of waste tyres using ultra high pressure water and the recovery of carbon black. As a leading expert on thermal microwave pyrolysis and gasification systems, he has developed laboratory and pilot-scale systems aimed at the recovery and reuse of carbon from waste materials. An active member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a chartered chemist, he has chaired the British Carbon Group and organized the World Carbon Conference 'Carbon'22'. He is also recognized as the youngest recipient of the prestigious Lampitt Medal from the Society of Chemical Industry.
