Biography

Geoff Nicholls, with a B.Sc. in Physics from Canterbury, New Zealand, and MA and PhD degrees from DAMTP, Cambridge, UK, has been a member of the Statistics Department at the University of Oxford since 2005. He previously led the Mathematics Department at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, from 2012 to 2015. His teaching focuses on statistics and probability, primarily at St Peter's College. His research interests include Applied Bayesian Inference, Bayesian Statistical Methods, Computational Statistics, Monte Carlo Methods, and Variational Methods, addressing complex Bayesian inference challenges in various fields such as Geoscience, Linguistics, History, Sociology, Genetics, and Archaeology. Geoff aims to develop new statistical models and computational tools to tackle demanding prior and likelihood evaluations.
