Geoff Thornton is a Professor of Physical Chemistry at University College London and a resident member of the London Centre for Nanotechnology. He received his DPhil from the University of Oxford before undertaking an 1851 Research Fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley. He was appointed as a lecturer at the University of Manchester in 1979 and became a Professor in 2003 after moving to UCL. His work has earned him prestigious recognitions, including the European Research Council Advanced Grant in energy-related metal oxide surface science, the Humboldt Research Prize, the Institute of Physics Tabor Medal, and the Royal Society of Chemistry Surfaces and Interfaces Award. Over his career, Thornton has published more than 340 papers and delivered over 30 invited talks in the last five years, including presentations at the International Workshop on Oxide Surfaces and the ACS JSPS Atomic Level Characterisation meetings.
