Biography

Geoffrey Abers is a geophysicist who employs earthquake seismology tools to comprehend the forces, material cycles, and deep structures of the Earth. He utilizes modern seismic instrument arrays, both onshore and offshore, to create high-resolution images of the crust and mantle. This imaging helps in understanding the material and fluid cycles of our planet. Abers earned a Sc.B. from Brown University in 1983 and a Ph.D. from MIT in 1989. He has held research faculty positions at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University, the University of Kansas, and Boston University before joining the faculty at Cornell University in 2014. He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the Geological Society of America, and a member of the Seismological Society of America. He leads projects like the Alaska Amphibious Community Seismic Experiment, serves as Vice-Chair on the Board of Directors of the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology, and is the chair of the MARGINS program. Abers' research primarily focuses on understanding the processes driving deformation and material cycling within the Earth, focusing largely on active plate boundaries, particularly subduction zones, which are responsible for the planet's largest earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
