Biography

Geoffrey C. Gurtner, MD, is the Johnson & Johnson Distinguished Professor in Surgery, Emeritus at Stanford University. He graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College and earned his MD from the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. Dr. Gurtner completed his residency in General Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School and plastic surgery residency at New York University School of Medicine. He is double boarded in surgery and plastic surgery and currently serves as the Executive Director of the Stanford Advanced Wound Care Center. Dr. Gurtner has made significant contributions to the fields of aesthetic surgery, wound healing, and breast cancer reconstruction, and is actively involved in research with multiple NIH and Department of Defense grants. An esteemed author, he has published 296 peer-reviewed articles and has contributed to various academic and professional organizations, including serving as President of the Wound Healing Society. In addition to his academic duties, Dr. Gurtner holds multiple patents related to vascular medicine and wound healing. His research interests focus on the mechanisms of blood vessel growth, tissue regeneration, and the interaction between fibrosis and wound healing.
