Geoff Hyett studied chemistry at the University of Oxford as both an undergraduate and postgraduate, earning a Master of Chemistry in 2002 and completing his doctorate under the supervision of Professor Simon Clarke in 2005. His research focused on the topotactic modification of layered oxysulfide selenide materials to control their magnetic properties. Throughout his research career, Hyett developed an interest in chemical vapor deposition for functional photocatalytic materials in thin films, having worked with Professor Ivan Parkin at University College London. He held a sessional lecturer position at Birkbeck College for a life sciences university access course before being awarded the independent Ramsay Research Fellowship in 2009. In 2010, he accepted a full-time academic lectureship at the University of Leeds. He was appointed as a Lecturer in Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Southampton in 2013 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2020.
